Doogee R08 review

Buy this if your tablet will see genuine hard use outdoors or in dusty, wet, or rough conditions and you can tolerate slow charging and a soft display. Otherwise, a standard tablet at similar money will give you faster performance and crisper visuals for indoor work or leisure.

This review is based on Doogee’s published specifications and public benchmark data for the Doogee R08, and the rating is spec-based. GoSolo does not physically test devices; where we estimate real-world behaviour such as battery life or charge time, we say so. How we rate phones.

Overview

The Doogee R08 is a rugged 10.1-inch tablet built for fieldwork and harsh conditions, with military-grade durability and all-day battery life that far outweigh its modest performance and low-resolution display. It's a specialist tool, not a general-purpose tablet.

Design & Build

At 716 grams and 13.5mm thick, the R08 is solidly built but predictably heavy for its 10.1-inch size. That weight reflects the reinforced chassis needed to earn IP68/IP69K and MIL-STD-810H certification. It will survive submersion to 1.5 metres for half an hour, high-pressure water jets, dust ingress, and repeated drops from tactical heights. For construction sites, field surveys, emergency response, or outdoor work in harsh climates, this durability is the whole point. A standard tablet would break in the same conditions. The dual-SIM slot and shared microSD tray add some utility for remote teams or extended deployments without Wi-Fi.

Display

The 10.1-inch IPS LCD runs at 800×1280 pixels, yielding roughly 149 pixels per inch. By 2024 standards, that is notably soft. Text, icons, and fine detail have a faint blur at arm's length that would annoy someone accustomed to modern smartphones or tablets. However, for a field tool where you are reading maps, forms, or photos in daylight or under a work light, it is adequate and does not require zooming for legibility. The 70.7% screen-to-body ratio is typical of rugged tablets; bezels exist to protect the glass and provide grip points. Colour accuracy and viewing angles are acceptable for a work display, not a creative tool.

Performance

The MediaTek MT8788 is a 2020-era chipset with four Cortex-A73 cores at 2.0 GHz and four A53 cores at the same frequency. Paired with 6GB of RAM and Mali-G72 MP3 graphics, it handles email, web browsing, document editing, and light apps without strain. Casual games like Candy Crush run smoothly. Heavy 3D games, video editing, or sustained multitasking between a dozen apps will show lag and occasional stutters. By 2024, this is behind the curve; even budget tablets ship with more capable processors. However, for a purpose-built field tablet, the modest performance is not the selling point, and unnecessary processing power would waste battery.

Software

Android 13 arrives pre-loaded, which is two major versions behind the 2024 baseline and one behind the current Android 14 or 15 releases. Update policy for Doogee tablets is sparse; do not expect more than one or two Android upgrades. This is a functional limitation if you rely on newer app features or security patches, though the device should remain usable for years in a constrained working environment. The lack of bloatware is a quiet win for a work device.

Camera

The 13MP main camera with LED flash shoots clear photos in daylight and passable 1080p video at 30 frames per second. In dim conditions, the LED flash helps, but there is no zoom or computational photography to fall back on. The 5MP front camera is fit for video calls on a pinch but not much more. For a tablet, camera quality is a novelty, and the R08 does not pretend otherwise. If you need real imaging capability, bring a phone or a proper camera; this one covers basic documentation and conferencing.

Battery & Charging

The 7680 mAh battery is the R08's strongest asset. On the low-power MT8788 and a dim 149 ppi display, it easily stretches to 10–14 hours of screen-on time during moderate work. Standby will push that to multiple days. The catch is charging: 10W is glacially slow by modern standards. From empty, expect 7–10 hours to reach 100%. For a field tablet that sits in a bag most of the time, this is tolerable; you charge overnight or during lunch. For users who need to swap between jobs during a single day, a dead battery forces idle time. Reverse wireless charging is listed but serves little practical purpose on a 716-gram slate.

Value & Verdict

The R08 is not a tablet for everyone. If you want a fast, gorgeous slate for media, gaming, or creative work, look elsewhere. What this device offers is genuine ruggedness, multi-day battery life, and a large practical display for work in hostile environments. Construction firms, surveyors, emergency services, and field technicians are the intended audience. It succeeds at that narrow mission. The price sits somewhere between a consumer tablet and a specialized industrial device, and the trade-offs are honest: compromised performance, a fuzzy screen, and slow charging in exchange for the ability to survive conditions that would destroy a standard tablet in hours. If that trade-off matches your needs, the R08 is a sensible choice. If you are shopping for a general-purpose household tablet or a gaming device, it is overkill and a poor value.

Verdict

Buy this if your tablet will see genuine hard use outdoors or in dusty, wet, or rough conditions and you can tolerate slow charging and a soft display. Otherwise, a standard tablet at similar money will give you faster performance and crisper visuals for indoor work or leisure.

Strengths
  • IP68/IP69K + MIL-STD-810H durability means it survives dust, submersion to 1.5m for 30 minutes, high-pressure water jets, and military-standard drop tests
  • 7680 mAh battery delivers roughly 10–14 hours of screen-on time, genuinely lasting a full working day without a charger
  • Large 10.1-inch display is practical for field documentation, spreadsheets, and maps, even if the pixel density is modest
  • Stereo speakers and 3.5mm jack still present for audio feedback and legacy accessories
Trade-offs
  • 10W charging takes 7–10 hours from empty, forcing downtime between shifts if battery runs out
  • 149 ppi display and 800×1280 resolution feel soft; text and fine detail lack crispness compared to modern tablets
  • MT8788 chipset and 6GB RAM struggle with heavy multitasking and 3D gaming, and the processor is dated even for 2024
