Nothing Phone (3a) Pro review

This phone suits people in cost-conscious markets who care about reading their screen in sunlight and charging speed more than gaming or screen sharpness. Anyone who wants a 1440p display, stronger performance, or tougher glass should cross-shop rivals at the same price.

This review is based on Nothing’s published specifications and public benchmark data for the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro, and the rating is spec-based. GoSolo does not physically test devices; where we estimate real-world behaviour such as battery life or charge time, we say so. How we rate phones.

Overview

The Nothing Phone (3a) Pro is a bright, practical midrange Android that excels outdoors and charges fast, but the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 1080p display feel a step behind rivals at this 440 EUR price. It's the phone for people who value a clear display and quick charging over processing power or screen sharpness.

Design & Build

The (3a) Pro is compact and light at 211 grams and 8.4 mm thin, with a plastic frame sandwiched between Panda Glass front and back. The triple LED strips on the back (26 addressable zones) sound gimmicky but offer genuine utility for notifications and fill light during video or selfies; nothing groundbreaking, but they work. IP64 means dust resistance and splash protection—fine for everyday spills and rain, not submersion. The real weakness is Panda Glass itself. Mohs 5 scratches visibly in a pocket with keys, and it does not offer the drop protection that newer hardened materials do. For a 2025 phone at 440 EUR, this feels like a corner cut compared to midrange peers.

Display

The 6.77-inch AMOLED is brilliant outdoors: 1300 nits (high brightness mode) and 3000-nit peak make this one of the most legible screens in its price bracket, even in direct sun. Scrolling is smooth at 120 Hz, and the 2160 Hz PWM dimming eliminates flicker at low brightness—critical for late-night use. Where it stumbles is resolution. At 1080 x 2392 pixels (387 ppi), text and icons have a visible soft edge next to 1440p rivals at the same price. It is not awful, and most will adjust within days, but it is a step down. HDR10+ and 1 billion colors are solid, and Ultra HDR image support adds future-proofing.

Performance

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is a capable upper-midrange chip that handles daily work without flinch: scrolling, messaging apps, social media, light gaming—all smooth. Demanding titles like Genshin Impact run at medium settings around 40–50 fps, which is playable but not fluid. The Adreno 810 GPU keeps pace with rivals at this tier; do not expect flagship speed. 8 GB RAM on the base models is adequate for multitasking, and 12 GB on the top trim keeps things relaxed. For the person who browses, streams, and plays casual games, this chip delivers. For mobile gamers or power users, it sits in the middle—faster than budget phones, slower than flagships.

Software

Nothing OS 4.0 runs on top of Android 15, with a promise of up to 3 major Android upgrades (so Android 16, 17, 18 at minimum). Nothing's skin is light and does not bloat the experience; the customization options (lock screen, wallpapers, glyph-controlled LED strips) are polished without being intrusive. Updates have been steady on prior models. For a 440 EUR phone, this support window is solid and competitive.

Camera

The 50 MP main (f/1.9, 24 mm, 1/1.56" sensor, dual pixel PDAF, OIS) is the star. It captures sharp, well-exposed photos in good light and holds detail under modest overexposure. The f/1.9 aperture wins in low light against the usual f/1.95 rivals. The 50 MP telephoto (f/2.6, 70 mm periscope, 3x optical zoom, OIS) is the headline grab—on a midrange phone, real optical zoom is uncommon and valuable. You frame distant subjects cleanly without the soft, interpolated mess of hybrid zoom. The 8 MP ultrawide (f/2.2, 15 mm, 120°) is functional but soft and mundane; Nothing does not push this lens. The 50 MP selfie (f/2.2, 1/2.76") is fine for video calls and portraits. Video maxes at 4K@30fps, which lags rivals now shooting 4K@60fps or higher; a missed chance. Night mode and computational photography work decently but are not class-leading.

Battery & Charging

The 5000 mAh battery lasts about 18–22 hours on mixed use (messaging, browsing, some video), and heavy gaming or streaming drops that to 12–15 hours. Nothing pretends; the battery is good, not exceptional. 50W wired charging is the real highlight: 19 minutes to 50%, 56 minutes to full. There is no wireless charging, but the speed of wired charging offsets that omission. A 30-minute top-up before you leave the house gives you a half charge—genuinely useful for people who live in high-mobility cities or who travel.

Value & Verdict

At 440 EUR, the (3a) Pro sits in a crowded midrange band. It excels at display brightness and charging speed—two things buyers notice every single day. It stumbles on screen sharpness (1080p) and build durability (Panda Glass), and the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is middle-of-the-road processing. If outdoor visibility and fast charging matter to you more than pixel density or GPU power, this is a smart buy. If you shoot a lot of video, game seriously, or want a sharper screen, look elsewhere.

Verdict

This phone suits people in cost-conscious markets who care about reading their screen in sunlight and charging speed more than gaming or screen sharpness. Anyone who wants a 1440p display, stronger performance, or tougher glass should cross-shop rivals at the same price.

Strengths
  • 1300-nit brightness means outdoor visibility rivals actual flagships—email, maps, and photos stay legible in direct sun without ramping gamma to extremes
  • 50W charging fills the 5000 mAh battery in 56 minutes flat, and 50% comes in 19 minutes; genuinely useful for a quick top-up
  • 3x optical telephoto (70mm periscope, f/2.6) on a midrange device is rare and lets you frame distant subjects without heavy quality loss
  • Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 8–12GB RAM keep everyday tasks smooth; scrolling, messaging, and light gaming hit no snags
Trade-offs
  • 1080p on a 6.77-inch display leaves text and icons visibly soft compared to 1440p midrange rivals; at 387 ppi, the pixel grid shows if you look
  • Panda Glass (Mohs 5) scratches easier than harder formulations rivals now ship; it offers less drop protection than modern materials
  • No real upgrade over the Phone (3a) from late 2024; the Pro label is mostly a periscope zoom and slightly brighter screen—the core phone is nearly identical
