Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 review

The Z Fold6 is for power users and creatives who actually use the tablet screen as a daily workhorse—not for curiosity seekers or those wanting a prettier regular phone. If portability and productivity matter more than battery endurance and fast charging, it's worth the cost; otherwise, a standard flagship from Samsung or rivals offers better value and less daily friction.

This review is based on Samsung’s published specifications and public benchmark data for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, and the rating is spec-based. GoSolo does not physically test devices; where we estimate real-world behaviour such as battery life or charge time, we say so. How we rate phones.

Overview

The Galaxy Z Fold6 is Samsung's 2024 flagship foldable that delivers a large tablet-sized display and current-gen performance in a form factor that remains bulky and power-hungry. It's genuinely useful as a portable tablet for power users, but the slow charging, short battery life, and $1,700 price tag demand serious commitment.

Design & build

Folded, the Z Fold6 feels dense at 239g and noticeably thick at 12.1mm—more like holding a compact tablet than a phone. Unfolded to 5.6mm, it's appealingly thin, though the plastic front pane doesn't feel as premium as the glass back. The aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and IP48 dust and water resistance (up to 1.5m for 30 minutes) provide adequate durability, though the IP48 rating means particles larger than 1mm can still seep in. The hinge is the weak point in drops; Samsung hasn't eliminated that anxiety. Stylus support is useful for the large unfolded screen, but there's no stylus included in the box.

Display

The 7.6-inch inner LTPO AMOLED runs 1856x2160 at 374 ppi, which is noticeably softer than a standard phone's text sharpness when held close. The 120Hz refresh and 2600 nits peak brightness are solid—readable outdoors and smooth for scrolling. The 6.3-inch cover display (968x2376, 410 ppi) is taller and crisper, making one-handed use workable if you skip the larger screen. The foldable's real strength is usable screen real estate: unfolded, it's a genuine tablet for content, work, and gaming that doesn't require a separate device.

Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with Adreno 750 handles the latest games at high settings and heavy multitasking without stumbling. Pairing 12GB RAM with UFS 4.0 storage keeps the system responsive even with many apps in the background. For 2024, this is flagship silicon; heavy users and creatives will find no bottleneck here. However, the performance advantage over last year's Z Fold5 is incremental, and the Gen 3's efficiency gains are partially negated by powering two screens.

Camera

The triple camera setup (50MP f/1.8 main with OIS, 10MP 3x telephoto with OIS, 12MP ultrawide) is solid for its era but not a standout. The main sensor captures good detail in daylight, the 3x zoom keeps sharpness for medium-distance subjects, and the ultrawide handles landscapes adequately. The 4MP under-display camera and 10MP cover camera are weak points—fine for video calls but not for photography. Video tops out at 8K@30fps, which is marketable but not practical for most users. Night mode is competent without being exceptional.

Battery & charging

The 4400mAh battery struggles under the load of two screens and a flagship chip. Expect 9 to 11 hours of screen-on time with moderate to heavy use—you'll likely need a charge by evening. Heavier use in apps like gaming or video editing will pull that down further. The 25W wired charging takes about 60 to 75 minutes to refill the battery, which is slow by current standards where 65W and faster rivals sit at this price. The 15W wireless charging is even slower and mainly for convenience. This is one of the few genuine daily compromises with foldables.

Software & features

Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1 and up to 7 years of major updates is Samsung's standard for flagships. The OS leverages the large unfolded screen well, with tablet-style multitasking and Samsung DeX support, though app optimization for the foldable format is still inconsistent. The under-display camera is hidden but doesn't disrupt the screen; it's the cover camera you'll reach for most shots. UWB support is included but has limited real-world utility outside Samsung's ecosystem.

Value & verdict

At $1,700, the Z Fold6 is a premium device for a niche audience. It justifies cost only if you genuinely use the unfolded tablet screen for work, content, or play—not as a status symbol or novelty. The short battery life and slow charging are the daily friction points, not glitches but real trade-offs. Storage tiers go to 1TB with no microSD slot, so you commit to your capacity at purchase. For a global audience in high-cost markets, the Z Fold6 sits alongside traditional flagships at a similar price while asking for more toleration of compromises.

Verdict

The Z Fold6 is for power users and creatives who actually use the tablet screen as a daily workhorse—not for curiosity seekers or those wanting a prettier regular phone. If portability and productivity matter more than battery endurance and fast charging, it's worth the cost; otherwise, a standard flagship from Samsung or rivals offers better value and less daily friction.

Strengths
  • Large unfolded screen (7.6 inches, 1856x2160) delivers genuine tablet real estate for work, gaming, and content without a separate device
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with 12GB RAM handles demanding multitasking and gaming at high settings without lag
  • Stylus support and Samsung DeX make the unfolded mode useful for creative work and productivity beyond typical phone tasks
Trade-offs
  • Battery life is about 9–11 hours of screen-on time; powering two displays drains faster than a standard flagship, requiring a daily charge
  • 25W charging takes 60–75 minutes to refill—slow by 2024 standards, leaving you tethered to a charger for longer than rivals at this price
  • At $1,700 with an incremental upgrade path from Z Fold5, it's expensive for users who don't use the unfolded form factor as their primary tool
